Alright, there has been some discussion over the last few months on exactly how spell slotting works, as well as using and dropping spells (spontaneous casting).
There are two different types of casters, spontaneous and prepared. Spontaneous casters, such as Sorcerers do NOT need to spell slot their spells. They have the ability to cast any spell from their spell list at any given time.
Prepared casters need to slot their spells prior to using them. Wizards use this method. If a prepared caster has three level 1 slots and one level 2 slots, she must pick EXACTLY what spells she wants to cast for the day. Those three level 1 slots could be three different spells or all three of them be the same.
Some prepared casters, such as the Druid, have the ability to spontaneous cast certain types of spells. Druids can channel stored spell energy into summoning spells that she hasn't prepared ahead of time. She can "lose" a prepared spell in order to cast any summon natures ally spell of the same level or lower.
Wizards and other prepared casters that do NOT have this ability are not able to simply lose spells in order to cast other ones. This would dissolve the point of spell slotting and make Wizards way more powerful than they already are due to the fact that they have a much larger spell list than other casters.
Please look over what I have written and give me any input. Sources if possible as well. Everything that I have quoted is in the core rule book and I do not currently have SRD links at this time.
